One Dead In Pair Of Multi-Vehicle Crashes On I-81

One person died in a pair of multi-vehicle crashes on Interstate 81 Monday, April 11, closing all lanes along the portion of the highway, authorities said.

The first crash involves a box truck on a bridge in the southbound lanes at Exit 65 - US 11/US 15, although both directions of traffic have been halted around 9:30 a.m., according to PennDOT.

Traffic has been redirected at Exit 66 and the public has been urged to avoid the area.

A second accident has supposedly happened near the same stretch of road in the southbound lanes  between Exit 67: US 22/US 322 WEST - LEWISTOWN/STATE COLLEGE and Exit 61: PA 944 - WERTZVILLE Road around 9:50 a.m., increasing the length and duration of the road closure, according to PennDOT.

At least one person has died at the scene of the second crash and another has been taken to an area hospital via helicopter, according to emergency dispatchers.

The roadway reopened after both crashes were cleared shortly after 12:30 p.m., according to PennDOT.

The number of persons and vehicles involved in either crash is unknown.
